Photo Spots at Mutianyu

Where the good views are

Most photos of Mutianyu are taken within a short stretch of wall. The cable car top station is at tower 14, and the platform there is a named photo stop. The views back along the ridge and forward to the next towers start right at the exit.

Beyond tower 15 the wall climbs on, and the towers stand close together. That rhythm of towers, crenellations on both sides and hills behind is what most people come for. You do not need to walk far to get it.

The main photo spots

From the cable car platform outward.

The platform at tower 14

The cable car exit is the easiest spot. You see the wall running both ways and the forested slopes below. The operator names this platform, the AAAAA sign and the Great Wall Hero Monument as photo stations. Allow a few minutes at each.

Towers 14 to 15

A short loop from the north entrance goes by cable car to tower 14, on to tower 15 and back to the cable car. It suits a visit of one to two hours. In autumn the red and yellow leaves are the main subject here.

The north path up to tower 10

The walking route starts at the north entrance and climbs the north path to tower 10, then continues to tower 14. It is steep in places and gives you the wall from below, with towers stacked up the slope.

The stretch beyond tower 15

Past tower 15 you get longer lines of wall and fewer people. How many towers are open varies: expect the walk to end somewhere between tower 18 and tower 23, and read the notice at the gate. Since 26 May 2026, parts of the wall between towers 16 and 17 are under restoration, while the inside of tower 16 stays open. Scaffolding can appear in your frame.

Tower 6 and the chairlift

The open chairlift reaches the wall at tower 6. Riding up on the open seats gives a clear view of the slopes and towers, and the toboggan runs back down through the forest. Ride times and tickets are on the page about the cable car, chairlift and toboggan.

Light, seasons and timing

In the main season the wall opens at 7:30 on weekdays and weekends. Closing is 18:00 on weekdays and 18:30 at weekends. Winter hours, 16 November to 15 March, are listed as 8:00 to 17:30. Check the current schedule before you go, and see the opening hours page for last entry times.

You cannot enter before the gates open, and a night in the village does not change that. Plan your shots for the first hours after opening, when the light is lower and fewer people are on the wall. Late afternoon is the other option, as long as you stay inside the closing time.

Do not climb on the crenellations for a picture, and do not carve or write on the stone. Closed sections of the wall are not open to visitors.

When to shoot

What each season gives you. The weather decides the rest.

SeasonWhat to expectGood for
SpringBare or just-leafing trees, mild daysClear lines of wall and hills
SummerHot and wet, July and August have the most rainGreen slopes, lit towers in the evening
AutumnRed and yellow leaves, usually strongest in OctoberColour on the slopes around towers 14 and 15
WinterCold and dry, snow is possible but never certainBare ridges and long views

The peak of autumn colour shifts from year to year, so do not plan around one date. More on months and crowds is on the best time to visit page. The wall can close in part or fully in bad weather.

Evening and lit towers

In summer 2026 the towers 10 to 15 were lit from 25 June to 31 August, with the lights on from about 19:30 to 21:00 depending on sunset. The shuttle and the cable car ran from 7:30 to 21:00 in that period. Evening visits needed advance booking with your real name.

Such programmes are seasonal and the chairlift and toboggan do not necessarily follow them. If you want evening shots, check that a programme runs on your dates before you book a bus back to Beijing.

Mutianyu photo spots: frequently asked questions

Where is the best photo spot at Mutianyu?

The cable car platform at tower 14 is the easiest and most used. From there, walk on to tower 15 for views along the wall in both directions. There is no single best place, since the angle matters more than the tower.

Can I see the sunrise from the wall?

The wall opens at 7:30 in the main season, so plan for the morning light after opening rather than the sunrise itself. Do not try to enter outside opening hours.

How many towers can I walk to?

That varies. Expect the open stretch to end between tower 18 and tower 23, and check the notice at the gate. Works between towers 16 and 17 have been under way since 26 May 2026.

When are the autumn colours at Mutianyu?

Red and yellow leaves are usually strongest in October, but the peak moves from year to year. Do not count on colour until the end of November.

Is the wall lit at night?

In summer 2026 the towers 10 to 15 were lit from 25 June to 31 August. Evening programmes are seasonal, so check your dates and book ahead.

Is this page run by the Mutianyu scenic area?

No. This is an independent guide with no link to the scenic area, its operators or any tour company.
