Great Wall Travel Tips for Mutianyu

A few things to know before you plan: bring your passport, expect real-name booking, sort out payment before you land and check the visa rules for your trip.

  • ★ Hand-picked, top-rated tours
  • 🧱 Tickets, transport and hikes explained

The basics before you go

Mutianyu needs a little preparation. Tickets are booked with your name and passport details, mobile payment is the normal way to pay in China, and the rules for entry into the country depend on your passport. This page covers the points that trip people up.

Most of it applies to any Great Wall trip from Beijing. The details on tickets, times and transport are on their own pages, linked below.

Practical points for the wall.

Passport and real-name booking

Booking needs your name, a phone number and your document details, and a passport is accepted. Take the original document you used for the booking with you. Prices and entry rules are on the tickets page.

Children and discounts

Foreign children from 6 up to and including 18 years can get the reduced ticket. Chinese minors up to 18 enter free. The shuttle and cable car are free up to 1.2 m in height, and above that the full fare applies. Reduced entry does not automatically cover the rides.

Toilets

Toilets are at the service area, along the shopping street, at the shuttle and lift stations and on the wall near the cable car platform. Do not count on a toilet at every tower. Go before you climb.

Food and drink

Eat in the village or at a lodge before or after your walk. Yisonglou, a restaurant inside the Mutianyu area, serves rainbow trout. Bring what you need for the walk itself, since you cannot count on shops along the wall.

Help on site

The scenic area lists a ticket information line at +86 10 61626928, a general information line at +86 10 61626022 and a rescue line at +86 10 61626537. Save them before you climb.

Weather and closures

July and August are the wettest months, and winter is cold. The wall and the rides can close in part or in full in bad weather. Check the day before and have a plan for a closed day.

Paying in China

Mobile payment comes first.

WeChat, Alipay and UnionPay

These are the usual ways to pay. You can register with a foreign or Chinese phone number and link a suitable bank card. Your card-issuing bank has to authorise the link, and fees and limits depend on the product.

Foreign cards

A foreign card does not always work at a given terminal or in an online ticket form. Set up your payment app before you arrive and carry a backup, such as some cash.

Tour payments

Some tour operators take cash, Alipay and WeChat for their own tours. That does not carry over to every till at the wall.

A typical self-organised day for an adult costs CNY 40 for entry, CNY 15 for the shuttle and CNY 140 for a cable car return, which makes CNY 195 in 2026. With the postcard ticket it is CNY 200. Rides for the toboggan and chairlift are extra.

Visa and entry rules in 2026

Check the current rules before you book flights.

RuleWhat appliesUntil
Visa-free entryOrdinary passports from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain: tourism, business, visits, exchange and transit up to 30 days31 December 2026, 24:00
240-hour transit57 nationalities, 65 ports in 24 provinces and regions, up to 10 days in permitted areas–
RegistrationHotels register you at check-in; private lodging within 24 hours–

For the 240-hour transit you need an ordinary passport and a confirmed onward ticket with date and seat to a third country or region. A flight back to the country you came from does not qualify. Germany and Austria are on the list. In Beijing, Capital and Daxing are entry ports, and you apply at the 240-hour counter. The stay printed on your entry stamp is the one that counts. A short layover does not guarantee time for a Mutianyu day. More on the sister site: visa-free entry to China.
